    You might remember that last year, I had the pleasure of featuring Kijani Curlcare and Skincare at the KICC during their exhibition. Their commitment to quality, natural ingredients for both skin and hair really stood out. So, when I heard they were launching a brand-new hair product, I knew I had to be there!

    The destination was Utawala Shompole Salon & Spa, and the buzz was all about Kijani’s latest innovation. I even got to catch a ride with Co-Director Rodgers Egesa, and our journey to the launch was as insightful as the event itself.

    The Road to a New Product: Resilience and Customer Focus

    Heading to the venue, Rodgers shared some candid thoughts on the realities of building a brand like Kijani. “Every foundation requires time,” he mused. “You find yourself always exhausted until you feel you’re almost giving up… now that is when you’re almost there.”

    He spoke of venturing into “a territory that very few people have entered into,” where the “terrain is a bit rough.” It’s a stark reminder of the dedication behind every product we see on the shelves.

    So, what sparked this new addition to their line? Rodgers explained, “People have been asking for it, and then most of our competitors, that’s the journey they took.” But more than just following trends, it was about completing their offering.

    He used a fantastic analogy: “With skincare, it’s like you want to be selling food; you need to do Ugali and Mboga and everything so that somebody doesn’t have to buy Mboga here and Ugali on the other side… you are totally responsible for the results.” This holistic approach ensures customers get a complete solution from a brand they trust.

    Since our chat at KICC about six months ago, Kijani has been busy. “Business is good,” Rodgers shared. “We opened a pick-up point in Platinum Plaza [Nairobi CBD] and Posta in Mombasa.” They’re eyeing Nakuru and Eldoret next!

    Their strategy involves smart growth, like utilizing pick-up points in high-traffic areas – “it’s a bit cheaper, you just rent shelves.”

    Marketing, Rodgers emphasized, is “a very key component,” especially in the beauty industry. They work with influencers who can “communicate the product better,” often collaborating with those who are also looking to grow and prove themselves.

    He also highlighted the invaluable role of small distributors – “people who have two branches, five branches” – as crucial partners in their journey. “I will never forget those people,” he stated, appreciating those who opened doors for Kijani in the early days.

    Rodgers graciously welcomed everyone, emphasizing that the launch was a testament to “our customers’ trust and faith in the brand.”

    Inside the salon, we got to see the Kijani range in action. Linda, a client, had her hair washed with the Kijani Shampoo Bar. “It’s not your ordinary shampoo because most shampoos come in liquid form,” she noted. “I feel my hair is so detangled, fresh, and I’m excited to see the aftermath.”

    The Kijani conditioner followed, praised for its moisturizing and detangling properties. “It doesn’t hurt and it can be used on a child,” was the feedback, highlighting its gentle nature.

    Then came the moment for the new Flaxseed Gel Curl Cream. Applied to damp, freshly washed hair, the cream is designed for styling, particularly for twist-outs.

    The stylist explained, “The curling cream makes the hair have this springing effect and makes it last longer.” It’s all about defining those curls without the need for harsh treatments.

    Later, after a product photoshoot at the beautiful Serene Gardens, I sat down with Sarah Guantai, Director of Kijani Curlcare and Skincare, to get the full scoop on their latest creation.

    “The new product that we’re launching today is called the Flaxseed Gel Curling Cream,” Sarah confirmed. She elaborated on its impressive benefits:

    Being a member of a religion means you believe in God or some higher invisible being. The creator of the universe. When you embrace faith, prayer becomes an integral part of your existence. It’s not merely a ritual, but a continuous dialogue that shapes your thoughts, actions, and interactions with the world.

    Often, we relegate God to the sidelines of our business endeavors, viewing Him as an observer rather than the guiding force.

    Fostering a culture of prayer in your workplace can significantly ease the burden of business.

    By consistently seeking God’s guidance, seemingly insurmountable challenges may become surprisingly manageable.

    Stress can be a debilitating factor in the business world. Consider this scenario: A client approaches you with a project, and you agree to terms. You begin work, anticipating the client’s cooperation to ensure a successful outcome. Despite your expertise, the client’s lack of collaboration hinders your ability to deliver quality service. This disconnect creates unnecessary stress, as you find yourself navigating unreasonable demands while striving to meet project goals.

    How do you handle a situation like this? Will you give up and request for cancellation of the contract?

    I have been in this situation in the past and here is how I coped.

    Giving Up

    After a stressful experience with a client that ended up costing me more than what I earned, I decided to stop offering that service to other clients. However, years later, when a similar incident occurred on a different project, I realized that giving up was a mistake. I should have continued providing the same services despite the negative experience.

    Do Not Let One Experience Mess Your Vision/Dreams

    I recently watched a video on YouTube about a philosopher who said he believes in reincarnation. Reincarnation is the belief that a living being’s non-physical essence is reborn in a new physical form after death. It’s also known as rebirth or transmigration.

    Reincarnation, in a business context, signifies the opportunity to rectify past mistakes and start anew. It implies that setbacks are not necessarily fatal but rather stepping stones towards a better future.

    Your reaction to negative experiences can significantly impact future opportunities. Remember, every setback presents a chance for improvement. While it’s unlikely the client causing the issue will recommend your services, don’t let this deter you. Focus on learning from the experience and seeking out new opportunities to showcase your skills.

    Dust yourself off and confidently move forward, as the next opportunity awaits.

    You gain valuable insights from challenging experiences and ultimately become a leading force in the market.

    Relook at Your Pricing

    Evaluate the challenges you faced during the stressful project. Consider whether increasing your rates is necessary to mitigate potential future frustrations. If so, don’t hesitate to adjust your pricing accordingly.

    Many frustrations arise from projects where clients expect additional work without compensation, often due to inadequate initial budgeting. This can lead to increased stress and, in some cases, even threats of non-payment if you refuse to provide services outside the original agreement.

    When analyzing the sources of stress during a project, consider the potential impact on your profitability. It’s disheartening to invest significant time, effort, and sleepless nights into a project only to realize that the final profit margin is negligible or even negative.

    The goal of any business is to be profitable so stay focused.

    Build on Contract Agreements

    Always establish clear terms and conditions with your clients, regardless of whether they’re individuals or businesses. Draft a comprehensive contract agreement that outlines the scope of work, payment terms, deadlines, and any other relevant details. Ensure both parties sign the agreement and retain copies.

    If a client fails to sign and return the contract within a specified timeframe, consider it a breach of contract and reserve the right to cancel the project. Any associated costs should be borne by the client.

    The contract you sign with the client will serve as a safeguard during your service tenure. It will clearly outline the scope of work and any additional services that may incur extra fees, preventing misunderstandings and setting clear boundaries for both parties.

    Learn to run your business unusually so that it gives you exemplary results.

    Relook At Your Team

    The root of your problem might lie within your team. While many individuals claim expertise, they often lack essential interpersonal skills. It’s crucial to invest in training your team members on effective communication and cooperation. Those who consistently fail to meet these standards may need to be replaced. Don’t tolerate incompetence.

    Neglecting underperforming team members can lead to subpar service delivery and dissatisfied clients. Don’t hesitate to take decisive action by terminating the employment of individuals who consistently fail to adhere to your standards and expectations.

    Conclusion

    Pressure and stress are inevitable parts of business growth. Learning to manage them is crucial for long-term success. When feeling overwhelmed after a challenging project, avoid making rash decisions.     The subject of faith, religions and beliefs is a debatable subject today depending on where in the world you come from. In the midst of the many different religious sects in the world, prosperity is the biggest selling ‘commodity’ used by evangelizers to spread their gospel.

    With internet here with us, the religious industry is concentrated with all kinds of gurus claiming to show people the secret to ‘attracting money, making money gaining fame, becoming wealthy, e.t.c. They know that most people are constantly looking for new ways to make money thus they have positioned themselves to solve their problem of money using the practices they propose.

    For instance, in Africa, Christianity, Catholicism and Muslim religions are widespread. People will relate and trust an individual more when they introduce themselves as a born again Christian. But is this all that an individual needs in order to gain a following?

    Yes, if they use the right keywords common in most churches to command response from the congregation or followers like ‘praise God’ lord be with you you.. e.t.c. It is even more effective if the presentation is done on video. You and I know that anyone can start and build an audience through video online.

    With the keyword search for ‘making money or attracting money‘ among the most searched topics online today, one can easily become a victim of self made Gurus in that niche. More and more people will want to consume these content if they are coupled with biblical facts or ancient religious practices related to Christianity. The world we are living in right now is saturated with facts about religion. You can find answer to anything online.

    Below is a video of one Youtuber claiming that rubbing hands with gridded cinnamon and salt will help one attract money to their life. Have a look.

    This presentation is from a Catholic Reflections Youtube channel. If you watch the video from the beginning, the presenter starts by greeting the viewers in the name Jesus, then goes on to preach the word of God a little bit before introducing her topic of the morning ritual that helps one attract money.

    Do you think Christians are convinced by such presentations as hers? absolutely yes they are, but not all. Her target audience are Christians. If a Christian is looking for ways to make money and watches this video, he/she might be convinced.

    But, Is This True or Acceptable in Christian Faith?

    The answer to this depends on the religious sect you belong to and the region in the world you are coming from. For example, in the religion that I belong to, this will be categorized as idol worship which is forbidden by the 10 commandments in the bible.

    Exodus 20:3 says “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.”

    Shifting your believe in God as the provider and starting to believe in salt and cinnamon for financial breakthrough is not encouraged.

    This takes me to the next item in my list.

    Attracting Money With Money Plant

    Money plant is a succulent indoor type of plant that comes is various types. It is associated with prosperity and nourishment. Chinese Feng Shui practitioners think very highly about the money plant. People believe that if the person owning this tree can grow it and take care of it well, they will have even more good luck.

    Practitioners have clear instructions on where to place the money plant and how to attend to it for maximum benefits. e.g Placing in the south east side of your room means you will have high possibility of attracting more good luck to yourself. This idea is based on Feng shui compass.

    Having had money plant in my house in the past for close to 3 years, I think the claim is true as long as you believe that the plant will bring you good luck. Also, you must be around your home all the time to attend to the plant less it dies. If it dies, your financial luck dies. This is scary if you think about it deeply.

    Again, is this acceptable in the Christian or any other faith? Yes and No depending on how you support your argument. Plants are Gods creation and we have a responsibity to take care of them.

    Downsides of These Methods

    The two examples of practices I have shared with you above gives you a picture of how much influence some practices have on an individuals faith. If you search on Youtube, you will find several types of these videos including the Money plant presentations. The presenters make these practices look easy to the viewer or reader that one would not hesitate to practice them.

    However, practicing these without thinking about its downsides may get you in trouble in a long run. For instance, in the cinnamon and salt secret to attracting money, one is required to rub the salt and cinnamon on their hands every morning for them to attract money.

    What happens when you travel far away and forget the cinnamon at home and cant find some in where you go to? Will your attracting money powers die?

    On the other hand, it is believed that money plant will stop attracting wealth if one stops attending to it or if it dries up for lacking water.

    In life, you need to attract other things to your life apart from money. Does this mean you will have to practice something else to fulfil this purpose? Think about it.

    Now, lets look at the bigger picture.

    The Big Picture

    Keeping several things for various faith purposes in your house is overwhelming especially if you are a busy person. At some point you will forget some and the consequences of abandoning them will hit you back based on the faith you had in them.

    In a country like Kenya where most people are christians, catholics and muslims and have some things in common about God, it will be really hard to keep up with these practices of attracting money. In a long run if you practice them, you will find yourself the odd one out.

    Even though the question of faith is a very debatable subject across the world; the idea of believe in one invisible God still stands. We all have different believe histories. Some have retained their traditional belief in God while others have embraced the western model of believe because of the good that it comes with.

    All in all, the believe in one supernatural God as the source of everything is easy to practice. You don’t need to practice any of these things you see online that promises to solve your money problems. God and the faith you have in what you do and desire will help you big time. You are in this world for a purpose and God is there to help you fulfil that purpose.

    He will provide you with all that you need to fulfil the purpose as you have fun in the process.

    It all begins with staying open to learn about God. I wish you well in your journey as you seek to strengthen your faith.

  • 6 Things That Tenants Look At When Searching For A House To Rent in Nairobi

    At the end of April 2023, I started my hunt for a house to let within Kasarani, Roysambu, Claycity, Santon and Ruaraka area. It took me 2 Months to find a quality and fairly priced house that suites me.
    I wanted a space where I can comfortably enjoy my stay when I am home without feeling uneasy or uncomfortable. That means it had to have some key features like good ventilation, continuous water supply, easy road access, internet e.t.c

    My Journey Started In April And Ended On May

    On April 2023, my search for a house around Thika Road began. During my hunt, I spent more than 20 days combined walking around the estates to view all available houses to let.

    At the end of my adventure, I had looked at over 100 houses in different regions of Thika road including Thome, Marurui, Roysambu, Kasarani, Santon, Clay city and TRM drive. Out of all these houses I viewed, I only picked one.

    PS: More than 50% of the houses that we had viewed had been vacant for more that 2 months. This means, people go there, view the house and find out that there is something missing and then go away never to come back again.

    So what made me choose the current house I am renting now over others?

    In this article I will share with you six house features that I think many tenants look at when searching for a perfect ‘house to rent‘ in Nairobi.

    This post will act as a guide to someone looking for a space to rent in Nairobi and any other place.

    Also, it will be a source of inspiration to current and future real estate developers.

    1. Convenience To The Main Road

    How easy is it to access the main road from the house? Do you have to take a boda-boda to connect to the main road? Even if the house has quality finish and you still spend money to connect to the main road, it is still not economical.

    I know you are asking; but it depends with what you do? Well, sometimes the convenience to the road come in handy e.g emergencies, security e.t.c.

    Having this in mind when searching for a house to rent in Nairobi will save one a lot of time. You will not waste time going deeper into the estates to look for a house. You will only focus on the ones that are closer to the road.

    2. House Design And Ventilation

    Is the house design appealing? How is the house ventilation from the inside? Some of the design features that was important to us was the positioning of the toilets, kitchen, bedrooms and balcony.

    There is a huge problem with many house designs in most flats in Nairobi. In some, the first thing you will see when you enter the house is the toilets, then Kitchen, then bedrooms then living room then finally the balcony. All the rooms are connected by a tiny corridor. This isn’t in anyway appealing having in mind that you have to pass through the corridor to connect to all the rooms.

    Another issue with many designs was ventilation. Many houses we viewed located at the Ground floor had very poor ventilation. There was no natural light coming into the house. This means that aside spending a lot of money on power, its not a conducive working environment if sometimes you work from home.

    Finally still on the issue of design, the curtain holders in most houses were ‘box type.’ They have not embraced curtain rods yet. So if one had curtains designed for rods, they had to install the rods at their own cost.

    3. Water And Other Amenities’

    One of the biggest problem in most Nairobi estates is water. Tenants are not told about the water rationing when they move in. I remember at one time, in my previous rental, we stayed a whole month without water. Thanks to my friend who lived in a house with no water rationing thus I did laundry and showered at his place until the water was back.

    But imagine, what will happen if you don’t have a friend you can run to for help when having water crisis? You will buy 20 litres of water at up to 100 shillings. On average, one person needs at least 40 litres of water daily to use in bathing and flashing toilets.

    The house design and beauty doesn’t matter if there is no water. It is better to pay for water in units than live in a house without water.

    4. Space Size Including The Balcony

    How spacious is the living room and bedrooms? In some houses, the bedroom space was very small that it only fits a 5×6 bed. Literally, the whole bedroom is occupied by only the bed which doesn’t make sense.

    Spacious living room and balcony is also important. In the balcony, one can hang clothes, relax and bask in the sun e.t.c. This are things that matters to anyone.

    In a spacious house, one feels free and flexible. There is a special feeling that one gets when he/she is living in a very spacious house.

    5. House Floor Levels and Lift

    Which floor is the house in? Is it in 1st floor or 6th floor? In my search, I found 3 good houses in 5th and 6th floor, but what turned me off was the poor ventilation on the stairs and absence of a lift.

    Imagine you have gone to the shop and back to the house only to realize you forgot to buy something essential from the shop. You will have to walk down the stairs to the shop and back to the house. In this day and age, that’s a lot of work. That is why its important to have a lift in place if the house is tall.

    Anything above 4th floor should have a lift for convenience.

    6. Cost

    This is the last thing that one looks at. How much is the rent? Some people rarely ask the renting cost if the house didn’t have the features they wanted. If they do, they will do it as a by the way. Some of the houses were overly priced despite having all the features we were looking for in a house.

    In many cases, I realized that many landlords are nowadays focusing on the decorations other than the space size thus charging more. There should be a balance.

    At the end, like business Tenders, one choses the lowest priced house with good space, water 24/7, security, easy access to the road and is properly ventilated.

    Conclusion

    If you are looking for a house to let in Nairobi, don’t rush; take you time. It will take time to find a good house that is habitable. A house that you can live in until you are able to have your own home designed to your own taste. You do not want to move into a house and little after moving in, you find a problem and you are forced to move out again.

    Look at your current life state and draw your inspiration from it on what to write on. For example, I am writing this blogpost at a time when I have less work that pays. What I am writing here is what I am practicing right now. Writing anything useful that comes to my mind on my blog is what I have been doing for as long as I can remember.

    It is important to dwell on positive things as opposed to negative ones. Every person who has succeeded in life confess that they found success the moment they dwelled on the positive things in life.

    Focus on ways to create abundance and internalize it for your own benefit. When you do so, you will surely be preparing yourself for abundance and at the right time, you will receive it.

    Try New Creative Things in Your Business or Freelancing

    Every day ideas for your business or freelance career comes to mind. The hard part is introducing the ‘new’ ideas to your business and trying them out.

    Take advantage of difficult times to experiment on those Ideas and see if they work. You never know, the ideas you have had in your mind for a long time might turn out to be the beginning of your success in business.

    Think of Partnering With Established Individuals/Companies

    During difficult times, money is scarce. Many at times, entrepreneurs and freelancers run out of money. On the other hand, many may have good ideas but lack financing to push the ideas forward.

    How about reaching out to an established company in your field and seeking their help to push your idea forward to fruition? Does it sound difficult for you to pursue? Everything is worth trying in life. Make sure you are well prepared when approaching these partners.

    If you pitch your idea well and it resonates well with their policy, then, they may consider working with you.

    For instance, freelancing on a platforms like Upwork, Fiverr, freelancer and others was very lucrative 5 years ago but now things have changed. It’s now hard to make a descent amount of money there. This is owing to an increased number of people joining these freelance gig platforms looking for work compared to the number of clients hiring.

    So what makes freelancing a lucrative career despite the shifting tides in the freelance marketplace? It is the individuals flexibility to adapt to change. In this blogpost, I will share with you 3 things that still makes freelancing a very lucrative career to date.

    Direct Connection With Clients

    One of the biggest shifts that we all witnessed during the Covid-19 lockdown in the year 2020 was the change on how businesses connect with their customers and workers. Freelancers were not left out. They contacted clients directly to seek for work as opposed to applying for work through the freelancing platforms.

    As it turned out from the freelancers I have interacted with, getting hired by a company directly online is more lucrative than applying for gigs every day via a freelancing platform. I am also a firm endorser to this approach to freelancing. It is the way to go.

    A good example is a client who hires a freelancer for a 6 months contract. The contract pays the freelancer an average of $4,000 a month. That’s good money depending on the country you are residing in.

    Moreover, you can plan how you will spend the money or invest.

    When you compare this to a freelancing on a platform; on a freelancing platform, it’s really hard to get a client who hires you and give you work consistently for more than 3 months. You may have a contract with a client for long but what you make from it in a month is very small.

    The secret today to a lucrative online freelancing career is to look for direct clients.

    Diversify

    Diversification gives one a room for growth. Diversity when it comes to freelancing is investing your earnings in profitable ventures. Before you do this, educate yourself on how different online investments work. For instance, before you start investing in cryptocurrency, educate yourself and know how the cryptocurrency you are investing in works.

    Look for avenues in which you make good profit from your investment.

    When you do this, you will be able to shift your focus from depending on one source of income to many. Freelance diversification is not only limited investments; you can diversify your knowledge as well.

    For example, if you are a video producer like me, you can diversify and offer video script writing and graphics designer. This move will give you a room to grow financially.

    Diversification multiplies your sources of income and this makes freelancing a lucrative career.

    Own A Business Online

    Take freelancing as an avenue to study and do market research for your next business. Have a goal of owning a business online that serves people within your career. The beauty of freelancing online is that you are paid as you learn how it works. When I started freelancing way back in the year 2013, I had very little experience in video production.

    When I was hired for my first job, I learnt from it. I kept perfecting it with time while working on paid contracts. However, my goal always had been to own a successful video production business in Kenya. At the time, I had started it offline.

    Take freelancing as your foundation to not only a lucrative career but a successful business as well.

    Once you have you idea ready, start. Know who your target audience are and address them clearly. When you position your online startup well, you will definitely prosper in it.

    The long term benefit of being a freelancer is owning a lucrative online business.

    With new emerging technologies and ideas, freelancing will never cease to be a lucrative career. Be very honest with yourself when you take this path. I have seen many people show off and lie on camera that their luxury lifestyles are being financed by money they got from freelancing, trading on Forex, writing e.t.c. Not all of those who share their story about their freelancing journey or trading are lying. But the loud and flossy ones in most occasions lie.

    When you get into the world of freelancing, be open minded. When you come across a good idea, pursue it with a positive mind. When you do so, you will surely succeed.

    We all have the power we need to do and achieve all things we need for ourselves in life. The problem is, many of us either don’t know how to tap on this power or they believe it comes from other people and not within themselves.

    Based on my many years of personal reflection and meditation, when I fail and I need to pick myself up, the power that I needed has always came from within me.

    The book of Genesis in the Christian bible chapter 1 verses 27 says ‘So God created a man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created.”

    What I understand from this verse is that, I have power within me because I am created in Gods image.

    So how do you tap onto the power within you?

    How do you first find the power within? On this blogpost, I will share with you 3 ways to tap on the power within yourself.

    Go on a 3-28 Days of Fasting

    When you feel lost or failed, the quickest way to get back on track is to fast. Fasting restores the power within you. This is aside many health benefits like improved heart health, weight loss, improved blood sugar control and more.

    Historically, in ancient Egypt, India and Greece, fasting was used for preventive and curative health purposes. It was also used to strengthen the spirit.

    It is well recorded that Pythagoras (580-500BC), the great mathematician and philosopher, systematically starved for 40 days, believing that it increases the mental perception and creativity – a notion that today’s scientists have proven to be so.

    When you are hungry, you can think clearly. You are like still waters that one can see clearly through.

    Fasting gives you the power over yourself. The process of denying yourself food despite wanting to eat is in itself very powerful. When you are able to control yourself you will be able to control everything that goes on around you.

    Recollect yourself by fasting for 3-28 days. You can choose to do a complete or partial fast. Be purposeful when you fast. Fast for a reason.

    Build Faith By Believing in God

    Faith begins with believing in something. Something/someone above and beyond your knowledge and understanding. Faith begins when you start believing in God. You will know him when you acknowledge that he exists.

    The moment you build and strengthen your faith on something immortal, you will be unstoppable. The same faith will spread to other areas of your life like business, career, family e.t.c. You will always have faith that you will succeed in what you do.

    Knowing God is a Journey. You will know him differently each day. He will manifest himself in your life when you purpose to follow him and worship him.

    My point is; you must be persistent in your faith in all seasons.

    Embrace Your Gifts/Talent Fully

    Another way to tap into the power within you is by embracing the talent and gifts you know you have. We are all gifted differently. Do you know what your talent or gift is? If you do, what are you doing about it?

    The first step is to identify your gift or talent. Once you know, do something about it. For example, if it’s writing, you can choose to start your journey by writing blogposts and sharing it with the world. Alternatively, you can start writing your first book.

    My point is, find a way to begin. Once started, perfect it over time.

    That process in itself will help you realize the power you have within you.

    Conclusion

    We are all powerful because God created us that way. Don’t let yourself be deceived by the ways of others. When you feel you have failed or lost, take a step back and try one of these 3 things I have mentioned above and rest assured all will be well again.
