  • 4 Professional Video Editing Software’s With Fair Terms For Beginners

In this blogpost, I share 4 of the many video editing software’s I have tried and tested since I started offering professional video editing services in 2009. Since that time, I have found these 4 to have good terms for beginners.

    Before I begin highlighting my picks; I assume you have the following;

    1. A computer with the right specs for video editing.
    2. And video editing/creation skills.

With this said, here are some softwire’s you can download and use for free and pay for it later when you have work that pays.

4 PRO Video Editing Software’s With Fair Terms For Beginners

    Camtasia Studio

    Camtasia -logo
    Camtasia logo

Camtasia studio is an easy to use software that I use all the time for my vlogs. As a beginner, you get 30 days trial when you sign up to download it. Within this period, you will be in a position to do many things with the software among them screencast video recording and editing.

You can even produce paid work using the software!

This way, when you get paid for the video editing job, you can upgrade to a paid version of the software.

    DaVinci Resolve 17

    Davinci-resolve-logo
    Davinci resolve logo

DaVinci resolve 17 is a free video editing software recommended for creators who are into filmmaking. You can do many things using the software on a professional level for FREE.

It’s important to note that the computer specs needed in order to use this software is a bit higher. Be prepared to purchase Blackmagic products as you progress.

    Final Cut Pro

    Final_Cut_Pro_2020
    Final Cut Pro

Final cut pro is another great video editing tool if you are a Mac user. When you download the software, you get a 90 day free trial.

This the longest window period that no other video editing software company has attempted to offer.

Their competitor Adobe premiere pro gives users only 7 days to try.

I believe they did this considering the video production industry terrain. There is no guarantee for work when beginning or at all time. Its a good offer for a starter who is hard working as they can learn to use the software and do a lot with it during this period.

    Avid Media Composer

    Media_Composer_Video_Editor_Software
    Media Composer Video Editor Software

This is another professional software that one can consider when starting up. It was widely used between 2000-2010 before final cut Pro came in for Mac. The company offers four different versions of the software.

As a beginner, you can start with the free version –Media composer first– then progress to the professional version of it once you start making money from video editing.

These are few of the many professional video editing software’s that I have tried and used for free in the past.

What About Adobe Premiere and Adobe After effects?

I know you are wondering; what about Adobe Premiere and Adobe After effects? I don’t think they are good for a starter who have no money to spend on software. 7 Days is not enough to explore a software and get comfortable with.

Secondly, I understand that many people have access and use patched/cracked version of all Adobe Software’s and uses it to do their work, am totally against piracy. I say from a businessman perspective.

If you want to organically grow your freelancing profession editing videos, I recommend purchasing software license or use the ones I have recommended above when starting up until you make money.

And that is it from me. Which professional video editing software do you recommend for beginners to use? Share your suggestion in the comments section below.

Until next time, bye bye and take care.

  • 3 Ways To Compress GIF Videos or Animations

The recommended file size for GIF video animations on various website platforms vary. As a video editor, its good to know how to compress GIF videos or animations.

Video: 3 Ways To Compress GIF Videos or Animations

In some websites, any GIF video file size will play, while in others, GIF’ whose file size is more than 5 Mbs will not play.

If the final file size of the animated GIF you have produced is larger than what the site recommends; how will you compress it without losing the video details? In this blogpost, I will share with you 3 ways of compressing GIF videos.

    Reduce Video Pixels

This is the first option you have to consider. What’s your video editing dimensions?

For instance, if you want HD video and your editing dimensions are 1920×1080, you may have to consider reducing the dimensions to that of a smaller version of HD. In this case, the size will be 1280×720. This will dramatically reduce the final GIF video size by Half.
If you are using Camtasia studio, go to project settings and select 720p HD. Most sites recommend a GIF video of 1200 Pixels. So this means you will reduce the dimensions from 1280×720 to 1200×676 pixels.

    Reduce Rendering Frame Rate

Popular rendering frame rate for GIF videos is 15 Frames per second. The highest frame rate recommended is 30 Frames per second and minimum is 1 Frame per second. The higher the frame rate, the higher the size, the lower the frame rate the lower the file size.

In the past, I have found out that 5 frames per second is very effective in dramatically reducing the video file size without the final GIF file lagging when you play.

To do this; in your rendering settings menu, click on the frame rate drop down menu and select 5.

Using Free GIF Compressors Available Online

There are many GIF compressors available online today. If you have tried the options above and your GIF video size is still larger than the recommended size, you may have to consider this 3rd option of using a GIF compressor. I have tried and used a free GIF video compressor found here. The results was very good. I was able to reduce my GIF video size by 68% without losing the image quality.

    Bonus Options

If all the above options of compressing your GIF video file fails, you may want to consider reducing your GIF Video duration. If your GIF Video is say 60 seconds, you can try reducing it by 5 seconds and see the difference.

Add clip speed to the GIF video
Add clip speed to the GIF video

Another way of doing this is to speed up the video on the timeline. This will help reduce the file size by a slightly small percentage.

    Conclusion

Learning how to compress GIF video files directly from your video editing suite is the best way I recommend. I know there are many other ways that one can do this.

Do you know of any other way of compressing GIF videos that I have missed to mention here on this blogpost? Please share and let me know in the comments section below and you will another freelancer out there wanting to compress GIF’s.

Until next time, bye bye and take care.

  • Video Editing Formula To Edit Videos Fast With Camtasia Studio

Like mathematics, video editing needs a formula which is different based on the software you are using to edit your videos. If you are new to video editing with Camtasia studio, the formula I am going to share with you here is going to save you a lot of time in editing your YouTube videos.

    video

In this blogpost I will share with you the simple formula I use in editing and creating videos for clients and myself.

It is important to note that the reason people edit videos is to communicate the message in the shortest time possible. How best can the story be shared? It all starts with a script.

    Script/Outline

Effective communication starts with a plan in form of an outline or a script. If you are working for a client, its recommended that you request for an outline or a script for use in video editing. This will be your guide as a video editor.

    Script outline

It gives you an idea of what the client wants to communicate. If its your video, then come up with an outline in point format so that you can save time when recording and producing the video. This way, you will know if the information you are sharing is making sense.

With a script or a project outline ready, you can now start producing your videos. Let’s now focus on the formula.

    Titles

This usually comes first. What is the video about? The viewer need to know what the video is about so as to decide if the video is right for them or not. This is key. In Camtasia studio, you can modify and use existing ‘premade motion graphics templates’ under library or create your own custom titles.

    Video Titles

If you are working on a project repeatedly, its best to create a library for your custom titles. This way you can easily import them to your timeline when working on a new video.

    Background Music

Its good to have background music especially if you are having titles in between the video displaying for 3-5 seconds with no narration or voice over. Before starting to edit your video, find a suitable music that you will use on the background.

    Keyboard shortcuts

Keyboard shortcuts will save you a lot of time. For instance, instead of clicking on a video and then moving your cursor to click on split icon. The easiest way to do this is to click on the video then tab on CTRL+S on your keyboard and the video will be split. Learn and master the shortcuts one by one.

    Adjust Audio Volume Accordingly

You will need to know how to add and adjust audio points. This is key when having a background music playing all through your videos. This way you can raise and lower the music volume as you wish.

    Audio volume adjustments

    Animate titles or Add Transitions

Adding transitions is easy. You can therefore start with transitions as a newbie then advance to learning custom animations as you edit and produce more videos. Animated titles are always professional.

    Video Transition

You can create a couple of animated titles and save them on your Camtasia studio library. Great brands use and reuse animated titles i.e logo, lower thirds e.t.c. This finally becomes their brand identity.

    Sound Effects

This is a bonus. Its not necessary unless you are a pro in video production. Sound effects requires a lot of accuracy. The effect or transition you apply needs to match with the sound. If you have enough time, you can add sound effects to your video.

When you know how to do the things I have listed above, then you have the formula at your fingertips. When you insert or create each item as needed when editing your video on the timeline, you will save a lot of time.

Did I miss anything in my formula? Let me know in the comments section below.

That’s it from me here. Until next time, take care. Follow me on twitter @cheptiony

  • Is There Anything More Than Bidding For Jobs on Freelancing Work Platforms?

Sending out new bids everyday via the freelancing site of your choice is boring and sometimes costly when you either pick the wrong job posts or use generic cover letters. It becomes even worse when you have done everything right but still don’t get any response.

    Summary in Video

In the year 2019, there was a very popular party goers anthem in Kenya by a Ugandan artist- BigTril-called Parte after Parte. The chorus to the song is very easy to master irrespective of how drunk someone is.

On top of that, its an easy one to refer to when talking about anything fun.

Like Parte after Parte, is freelancing- bidding after bidding?

Most Freelancers who have been in the business for 5 years or more will tell you that bidding as a way of acquiring new clients is no longer exciting to them unless they are invited by the client to bid on a project.

I am talking of long term freelancers with top rating status and raving 5 star reviews from their past clients.

Does this mean that they have enough jobs at their hand for them to apply for new work?

And if they do, why are they interested in getting new clients anyway?

There is never enough jobs for any Freelancer with a progressive mindset. As you build your portfolio as a freelancer, you tend to look for premium projects that challenges your creativity and innovation.

Before I delve into this, I will like to unearth the myths surrounding Top rating status and 5 star reviews that one gets after completing any given assignment.

MYTH NO. 1- When One is Top Rated, They Are Guaranteed to Get New Work

This is not true. The status only gives you a good standing on the freelancing platform and the chances of being recommended by the freelancing site you are in is high. Also, you don’t have to explain yourself very much when negotiating for a contract.

MYTH NO. 2: Clients Will Hire You Without Interviewing

It depends on which freelancing site you work on. Let me talk about Upwork. Clients come to the platform with various requirements and budgets. Before deciding to hire, they have to first discuss and agree with the freelancer on what they need. Sometimes, a top rated freelancer has everything that a client wants but will not be hired. Why? because their rates are high.

So, does this mean you have to continue to regularly bid until you succeed?

Yes. But have a different approach.

Narrow Down Your Skills Using The 80/20 Principle

More experience means more knowledge on what the market demands. Focus on sending bids to projects that requires the skills you have perfected and pays well. For example in video production, I have learnt overtime that I am good at Screencast Video Production. This is the area I have perfected my skills on. Also, I have invested a lot of income in purchasing software’s that makes it easy for me deliver the best quality of screencast videos.

    Mold Your Patience

Its easy to give up on freelancing considering that sometimes one can go for a month or so without work. If you know your worth, you must start cultivating your patience. It will take time to convert a high value client. In most occasions, they are not in hurry to hire. They take calculated risks before hiring you.

There’s more to bidding as your freelancing experience grows. What other ways do you approach bidding to break the monotony of bidding after bidding?

Please share your feedback on the comments below.

And if you need help to create and produce professional screencast videos and other kinds of videos, please request a quote here.

  • Why Sometimes Its Worth Cancelling A Well Paying Contract

I am writing this blog-post for people who love what they do and are getting well paid for it. When starting out to sell a skill that you love, it’s fun. You will take every chance that comes your way to perfect it. You will be less picky when offered an opportunity. The experience will be even sweeter when an opportunity is bundled with a good pay.

While you love what you are doing, you have values that matter to you. What believes do you hold dear to you?

With this said, will you take all the jobs you are offered if they are well paying and you are applying the skills you treasure most? They answer is absolutely yes. Now, this is where the catch lies. It will take you time to figure it out.

Of-course, any person who is morally upright, will never take a job that bridges on values irrespective of how sweet the offer is.i.e Producing Pornography videos.

Most of the jobs in this category are well paying because very few people will want to be associated with them. So, does this mean you are free to take any work so long as its not pornography? Well, the answer varies from one person to the other.

In this blog-post, I will highlight a couple of things that will make one give in to temptations to take a job that is promoting illegal and unscrupulous business.

Talk of good sales people selling snake oil. In this context, the content you are producing are used to sell snake oil- a product that does not exist.

You are only a Designer/Video Editor

The client will by all means, while requesting for your service avoid mentioning the kind of service that he/she is offering. He will clearly outline the skills he/she is looking for as well as share an example of the design or video they want emulated.

    light love los angeles traveling
Videographer at work. Photo by Kyle Loftus on Pexels.com

In most occasions, there will be nothing in the picture that will say they are planning to use it to sell “Snake oil’ to the unsuspecting people.

Going by how they are organized and convincing, how well they are paying, you cannot help but do the job. While doing the job, you will be tempted to do research on the product online to see if it exist.

In most occasions, it may or may not be existing. On the other hand, evidence of the product working might not be there despite the script claiming that is being used by thousands of people.

And as a designer or editor, you are like, why does that matter to me anyway, after all, I was not assigned to research on it!

You Receive an Offer At Your Lowest Moments

Everyone have their low and high moments in life. During this time of Covid-19, Freelancers pray that some business luck comes their way because they depend on gigs and direct business offers to prosper. If none of these are forthcoming, they are doomed. In this time, offers that does not align with your values come your way.

man wearing pink polo shirt with text overlay
Customers walking in the mall. Photo by Artem Beliaikin on Pexels.com

For instance, if you value privacy, and a client offers you a job to create a video or graphic for a product that promote hacking peoples private information for a good pay, will you take it?. Of-course you will. And then, you promise yourself not to do it again once you complete the job. In your heart, you are taking it because of the situation you are in.

    You Are Just Facilitating

Most freelancers who have been in the business for a long period of time own agencies. When one owns an agency, they can accommodate lots of projects. In most occasions, when you own an agency, you are not directly involved in editing or producing a project, you just facilitate.

people sitting on chairs beside their desks in an office
Work space in an Agency. Photo by Cadeau Maestro on Pexels.com

So, as long as the financial bit is good, and as long as it is not pornography, most agencies will take the job-unless your agency is involved in producing adult content. And as an agency manager, you will be assigning the work to your assistant editors.

It will take a while before the agency manager/Lead Freelancer realizes that he/she is accommodating a project that is going against his/her values.

    Conclusion

While there are more things that will blind an agency manager from seeing that the project they have just accepted is going against their believes and values, it’s always very crucial to maintain your stand as a leader. Have the discipline of counter checking projects first before accepting.

This way, you will be growing knowing that you are taking in contracts that are adding value to the users and are aligned to your values.

That’s where joy lies. When you get paid knowing that you have added value or created promotional item for a valuable product are happy and look forward to more.

And that is it from me. Until next time, take care.

  • How to Record and Edit Mobile App Demo Video

One of the ways mostly recommended to market a mobile app in App store or Google playstore is through a demo video. Now, the way you create and present the video is up to you.

The common and most effective way to do this, is by developing a professional screencast demo video. So, what is an app demo video? It’s a video demonstrating how an app works in real time. This way, interested users can watch it before downloading the application.

This is the best avenue to impress your prospects.

In this blogpost, I will show you step by step how I do it.

Step 1 – Install the App You Want to Demo

Install the app that you will like to demo on your phone. Open and preview it to make sure that everything is working well. Write a step by step script to guide you when recording the video. This is very important as the script will safe you a lot of time.

Step 2 – Download Screen Recording App

Note: For apple users, you don’t need this as most iPhones come with an inbuilt screen recorder.

There are many applications available on google play-store that you can use to record the screencast on phone. I recommend the one I use called Screen Recorder -no ads offered by Kimcy929.

    download screen recorder app
    Download the app

Step 3- Open the App and Adjust Recording Settings

Recording settings will vary based on your requirements. I recommend recording your video in full HD at 25 fps and 6mbps bit-rate.

    screen recorder app settings
    Adjust your app settings

The app allows you to record your own voice as well; so you can turn on the audio recording option. Your settings are saved automatically.

Step 4- Record Your App Demo

Note: As a rule of thumb, I recommend that you switch your phone to flight mode and use WiFi network if you need internet. This is unless you are using your mobile data for this task. This will help you focus and avoid interruptions from people calling you and messages coming in during the recording.

    Library of screen recordings
    Start your recording

Tab on the recording button to start. Open the target app and start your demo. Hit the recorders stop button when done with your demo. Your recording will be saved on your phone. It’s important to review the video recording before transferring it to your computer.

Step 5 – Upload Your Video To The Editor And Start Editing It

You can edit the video with virtually any video creation program. In the past, I have edited it on Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe after effects and Camtasia Studio. But to date, the easiest editor to use is Camtasia studio. The newest version of the program has more tools that simplifies the editing process. So let me take you the process of editing your video on Camtasia studio.

Upload Your Recording(s) to Camtasia Studio

Once you have uploaded the video, drag it to the timeline.

    Videos uploaded to Camtasia Studio

Change the canvas setting to 1920×1080 pixels.

Next, crop out the Black sections and resize your video to fit the screen.

    crop video
Crop the black sections on the video

Search for a Mobile Phone Image on Google

    mobile phone image
Mobile phone image from Google search

This is the phone that you will blend with the video to make it look like it’s a real phone in action. Download transparent .png image format for use here.

    Focus Your Attention to Details

This is very important. A little miss when scaling the recording to fit into the phone screen is very noticeable when rendered. So, look Keenly into details and ensure that you achieve it perfectly.

Adjusting video to a mobile screen
Details noticeable when fitting it into the phone

Once done, you can start editing your video and removing all the choppy sections. You can add a voice over, zoom in and out and add any other necessary effects to make it nice and attractive to watch.

Learn How to Edit Video on YouTube

If you are new to editing, you can search and find several videos on Youtube teaching people how to edit with the program of your choice.

    And that is it.

Now that you know the process of creating a demo video for your mobile app, you can start practicing it until you are perfect in it.

But if you are a busy professional and you have less or no time to create a professional mobile app demo videos, let me know here.

Until next time, bye bye and take care.

  • 3 Commonly Used Styles to Splice Up Video Presentations

Before I start writing today\’s blog-post, I will like to wish you a happy new year 2019. Let\’s toast for more Good Life. More love. More success and fulfillment. And most importantly more Freedom to enjoy life doing what we love most. Cheers!

Now with that said, lets dive in. There is a secret in video marketing called \’Pattern Interruption.\’ It\’s commonly used in Video Sales Letters. Successful online video marketers utilize it in their videos. It is a psychological trigger that arouses the subconscious part of the brain. This works best on long versions of sales letters.

In other words, pattern interruption is meant to excite you and make you interested in learning more. This technique varies. For longer videos, it\’s more of the \’story-line,\’ while for shorter videos, it\’s the video effects, transitions and sound effects. Here is a list of common ways that you can use to splice up your videos and eliminate monotony.

    1. Custom Video Transitions

Note that we have video transitions that comes along with the video editing software. I am not talking about those. I am talking of the custom made ones. This is where your creativity comes in. Most of these transitions take less than 1 second or 25 frames. It\’s that fast. You have to be creative and think outside the box in order to come up with your own transition using the tools inside video editing suite.

Expert Advise: Do not use more that 3 different transitions in a video. It\’s unprofessional. People will think that you are trying hard to sell on them. This is unless its animation.

    2. Video effects

This is common when working on motion graphics content. You may add particles, bubbles and even change color to suite the requirements. This works well for film trailers and it bring in certain feeling in the video.

    3. Sound Effects

No trailer is exciting to watch if it has no sound effects. It makes the video very pleasing to watch. It goes hand in hand with video transitions and effects. For longer videos, try to limit use of sound effects to be within the first 2.5 Mins.

    Bonus

Story-line pattern is another way to splice a video. For instance, if you are working on a 30 minutes Video Sales Letter, changing the story-line and throwing in different videos in intervals is crucial to break the monotony. You can integrate interviews of people whom you have solved their problems in between as well as testimonials.

    And that is it.

Do you know of any other way to splice up your video presentations? Share it in the comments section.

  • 3 Reasons Why You Should not Subcontract a Project you are Halfway Working on

Lets say you are working on a project with a 5 day timeline. On your third day, you are done with the first draft of the video. You share it with your client. Your client is impressed but still need few changes.

While you plan to make the changes, you receive a call from a different client who wants you to go out and film something for him/her for 2 days and it\’s urgent.  You don\’t want to disappoint the two because they trust your service. What will you do?

    \"man
Photo by Marc Mueller on Pexels.com

In a scenario like this, you will have to forego one project and hire someone else to do it on your behalf. Now here comes the problem, some clients(especially in filming) insist that you be there yourself. This is where you have no option but to assign someone else the project you are currently editing.

If you do so, you will be making a big and costly mistake unless you are assigning it to your assistant editor who works with you in the same office. Here are three reasons you should not hire another freelancer to continue with the project you started.

Delivery Time Will be Much Longer

Considering that it may take you 1 day to find a suitable freelancer to take over the project, having them understand the presentation style, idea and so forth will take you another 1-2 days. He/she will have to send you their version then you review it before sending it to the client. This will mean another 1-2 days back and forth. At the end, you will not have met the deadline.

Some Clients Will Notice the Change in Hands

Many online clients are very keen. By just watching the video, they will quickly notice that someone else made the changes/revisions. They ask questions like; The transition effect at 1.02 Minute is not smooth, did someone else edit this video

You May End up Loosing Both Your Time and Money

Some freelancers are excellent at what they do but they lack one discipline- communication. They may communicate well during the interviewing process but end up taking more than 24 hours to respond to your messages when the delivery time comes. In such scenarios, you may resort to close the job and do it yourself bearing the pressure from your client. If you had made a down-payment, you will end up loosing both your time and money without any progress.

    Conclusion

If you find yourself in a situation like this, it\’s important to discuss with your client on the possibilities of extending the delivery deadline. You will be surprised on how cooperative the client is in accepting your request. Such bold step displays your professionalism and honest.

And that is it from me today. Till next time, bye bye and take care.

  • How to Create a Video from Scratch Using FREE ‘Google’ Images and videos and get Paid For it

Now, let\’s say you meet a client online and he/she has the video script but is clueless on how to visualize script into a self explanatory video. Additionally, the client is not willing to appear on video or is working on a small budget thus can\’t pay for a shoot. How will you advise him or her after you have looked at the script? Will you dismiss the client and say you have no idea how to go about it?

Of-course, as a  creative video editor or producer, you will not. But you will be surprised by the number of freelancers who dismiss jobs like these for the fear of creating something that the client will reject.

If you are one of them, this article will be very helpful to you.

Now, get this; by the time your prospect arrives into the decision of reaching up to you for help on his/her video project, it means that they value your skills and professionalism.

Even if you have no clue on how to go about it (based on the script provided);  your must act professional.

Here are my four steps to working on a project like this with confidence.

Ask Your Client to Give you Time to Look into the Script

When you receive an e-mail from a prospect- you get excited – and start imagining payment hitting your account before you even start the job:-). Some freelancers even accept a job without thoroughly analyzing their clients requirements. This is a big problem, and a seasoned client will quickly notice this.

When  you find yourself in a such situation, be professional, even if you know how to go about the project- don\’t rush. This first impression will make you client handle you with respect you deserve.

Do Your Research and Propose Different Video Presentation Styles

YouTube is a good video resource with both short and long videos. This is the best reference point for your research. Pick out video styles that you know you will be in a position to produce. Then when getting back to the client, tell him/her that you are able to produce the video. Share the possible presentation styles you found out from your research on youtube.

Most Videos are Produced Using Animated Clip Arts/Images

Depending the script and presentation style the client picks, utilize ‘google search‘ to source free \’clip arts\’ for use in producing the video. At the end of the day, you want a fun to watch video that communicates. Most of these clip arts and images are free. You can modify them on photoshop to suite your clients color and theme. You can also use free no watermark videos.  Read the post on Four Best Websites to Download Free No Watermark HD Videos to Incorporate to Your Video Project and see where to download free videos.

Close the Deal and Start Working on the Video

The step above is enough to convince your client that you are able to produce the video. Serious client will ask you the cost of production right away.  This is most exciting part but don\’t be excited yet until your client commits-in this case a contract agreement. Charge him/her fairly and do a fantastic job you are proud of.

So, next time a client contacts you with only a script; pause and do your research first before accepting to work on the project. You will be a surprised on how easy it is to produce the video.

Till next time, bye, bye and take care.
